What is Digital Marketing?
Digital marketing refers to the process of marketing your products, services or brand using digital devices.
Remember, digital marketing is not something that can be done on the internet only. It can happen online as well as offline. Digital marketing is an “umbrella” term that includes several different marketing techniques. There is actually a slight difference between digital marketing and internet/online marketing.
The major online digital marketing channels are search engines, social media, emails, and websites. Whereas, the offline digital marketing channels are TV, radio, and phones. You need to implement both forms of marketing for creating an effective marketing strategy for your business.

Internet marketing, also known as online marketing, is a subset of digital marketing. This kind of marketing requires a live internet connection to work. For example, if you are running an ad campaign on Facebook, you are actually doing online marketing or in broader terms digital marketing.
In reality, the difference between digital and internet marketing is a mere technicality. The majority of digital marketing techniques revolve around online marketing tactics which is why both the terms are used as an alternative of each other most of the times.
Types of Internet Marketing
The 5 different types of internet marketing include:
- Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
- Social Media Marketing (SMM)
- Email Marketing
- Affiliate Marketing
- Influencer Marketing
Let’s have a detailed look at them below:
1. Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
It is one of the most popular and primary types of online marketing that helps businesses in gaining exposure and multiplying their profits.
Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is the process of getting traffic, exposure, and visibility for your product, service, or brand through search engines using paid and unpaid techniques.
SEM is divided into 2 groups:
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Unpaid SEM
- Pay-Per-Click (PPC): Paid SEM
a. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
It is the process of increasing ranking and getting traffic to your website organically through search engines. SEO is all about using the right tactics to get a higher position in the “unpaid” search results of the search engine result pages (SERP).

Creating engaging content and sharing it in the right manner is the foundation of social media marketing campaigns.
Social Media Ads are the latest advancement in the field of social media marketing that businesses are using to grow and reach the targeted audience for effective results.
Different types of social media ads include:
- Photo Ads
- Video Ads

- Dynamic Ads
3. Email Marketing
Email marketing is one of the oldest types of digital marketing that provides highly satisfied and fruitful results. Out of all the forms of digital marketing, it provides the highest ROI which is why it is used widely by the marketers.
It is basically a personalized approach where you communicate directly to the online users to achieve a certain goal such as promoting downloads, getting website visits, generating sales, or getting leads.
The major goal of email marketing is to deliver the message of your business to consumers. For this purpose, you create active email marketing campaigns and explore how the users are interacting with the emails you are sending.
Major components of email marketing include:
- Marketing Offers
- Event Invitations
4. Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is the type of internet marketing where you get a commission for marketing the products or services of another company. While working as an affiliate, you search for the products of your interest, promote them, and earn a commission for each sale. Your performance is tracked via affiliate links.
Nowadays, affiliate marketing is becoming a quite popular way of earning money from home as it provides you the flexibility to market the products of your own choice from the comfort of your place and in the way you want.
There are three parties involved in affiliate marketing:
- Product Creator or Merchant
- Advertiser or Affiliate
The affiliates get paid in various different ways which are:
- Pay Per Click (PPC)
- Pay Per Sale (PPS)
- Pay Per Lead (PPL)
5. Influencer Marketing
The idea of influencer marketing came from the concept of a celebrity teaming up with a company to market a product through a video or a television ad.
In influencer marketing, unlike celebrities, common people with a large following become influencers. They can be anyone and anywhere in the world. Their huge following on the web and social media make them influential.
An influencer can be a popular blogger who creates engaging content, a photographer on Instagram, a student on Snapchat, or a human resource manager on LinkedIn. Different companies or brands look for the influencers that are easily recognized by hundreds and thousands of common people for reaching their target audience and market the product/service.
For becoming an influencer, you need to:
- Identify your niche
- Choose a social media channel
- Develop an appropriate content strategy
- Share your content
- Grow the network
- Engage with your followers
- Evaluate the progress
- Stay consistent
Alright, that was all about the basics of digital marketing. I’ll discuss each topic with more detail in the coming blog posts. For now, if you have any queries, feel free to ask in comments. 🙂
